65 years of unwavering care: Alan's inspiring journey with Barts Health

In honour of the NHS's 75th anniversary, we share the remarkable journey of Alan, a patient who has been under our care for an incredible 65 years.

Alan was born in 1958 and diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, a heart condition, at a young age. His first open-heart surgery was performed at St Bartholomew's Hospital when he was just five years old. There was no facility at that time for parents to stay, so his mum travelled up to London on public transport as often as she could see Alan.  The separation broke both their hearts.

Despite the lengthy hospital stays and separation from his family, Alan survived, becoming the sole survivor among three children who underwent surgeries at the same time. A hospital letter from the time talks about Alan being allowed home, on a piece of elastic.

Alan Partridge At the age of ten, Alan returned to St Bartholomew's Hospital for a second heart surgery. The dedicated medical team provided him with exceptional care, which continued into his adult life. Alan underwent two more open-heart surgeries as an adult, receiving outstanding attention and treatment from the best doctors and nurses in the country.

As an adult, Alan has always worked full-time with interesting and fulfilling careers in blacksmithing, horology, and shallot making.  He has received an award from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust, a national prize in horology, and attended a Royal Garden Party for services to Organ Building. He has three adult children and five grandchildren.  None of this would have been possible without the skill and dedication of the care he received.

Alan's story exemplifies the impact of the NHS over the past 75 years. As we celebrate this significant milestone, we honour the unwavering dedication of our healthcare professionals who continue to transform lives every day.

Together, we salute the NHS and eagerly anticipate the next 75 years of providing exceptional care to patients like Alan, whose stories of resilience and gratitude inspire us all.
