Located in Plaistow in the vibrant East End of London, it provides all the services expected of a local hospital, including emergency care, surgery, women’s and children’s health, maternity services, specialist medicine and more.

Newham Hospital is a teaching hospital primarily serving the residents of Newham.

It has a 24 hour A&E including 24 hour paediatric A&E, and children and young people are admitted to the Rainbow Centre for inpatient and day care. The Rainbow Centre also houses the children’s outpatients department.

By bike

Cycle parking facilities are available around the hospital. Cycle routes in the local area that allow you to reach Newham Hospital include Cycle Superhighway 3 (CS3) which runs from Barking to Tower gateway and also the Greenway which runs from Beckton to Hackney.

By car or taxi

Limited car parking is available in the hospital together with spaces for Blue Badge holders. Please only bring your car if it is absolutely essential and note that there is a charge to visitors parking at Newham Hospital.

There is car parking available for all visitors near the main entrance of the hospital and directly outside the Gateway Surgical Centre. The cost of this is:

  • Up to 1 hour: £2.00
  • Up to 3 hours: £3.70​
  • Up to 6 hours: £7.00​
  • Up to 8 hours: £8.00​
  • Up to 24 hours: £16.50

Two short stay pick-up/drop-off bays are also provided adjacent to both main hospital entrances at St Andrew’s Wing and the West Wing / emergency department entrance.

Infopoints allow you to make free calls to taxi companies to arrange a journey. There are infopoints located at our emergency department, St Andrew's Wing, The Gateway Surgical Centre and the West Wing Entrance of Newham Hospital. Staff at the reception desk in St Andrew’s Wing can assist in the booking of a taxi.

The non-emergency patient transport service

Our in-house non-emergency patient transport service team and contractors provide a high-quality, punctual, and professional patient transport service (PTS). Their service is available to be booked to and from our hospital.

Refunds of hospital transport costs

You may be able to claim a refund for the cost of your transport to hospital through the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS) if you: 

  • are not eligible for the patient transport services
  • cannot afford the cost of travelling to hospital
  • cannot get a friend or relative to take you

Welcome to Rainbow Centre

Welcome to our Rainbow Centre. Here you will find information about what to expect during your stay with us.

Visiting the Centre

Visiting times are 2pm until 7.30pm with only two visitors per patient at any time. Parents are allowed to visit at any time day or night, however only one parent can stay overnight. 

If you are experiencing any cold like symptoms, diarrohea and vomiting or have been in contact with somebody that is infectious, please refrain from visiting.

When entering or exiting the ward please wash your hands using soap and water or use the hand gels provided to reduce the risk of spreading infections.

We have a seven-day parking permit for £7.50 please ask a member of staff

Food and drink

We have set a variety of diverse foods choices, which enables you to choose your own meal and order in advance. Only patients, expectant mothers and mothers that are breastfeeding will be offered food from the menu. We have a parent’s room where you can make hot drinks and store food in a refrigerator, however this must be labeled. There is a microwave too. Please take care to keep this area clean and tidy so that everyone can benefit from these facilities. Please note no hot drinks allowed throughout the units apart from parents’ room due to health and safety. Staff are not permitted to reheat any food.

Meal times are as follows: 

  • Breakfast 8.30am until 9am
  • Lunch 12pm until 12.30pm
  • Supper 5pm until 5.30pm

As part of our holistic care we offer snack round at 10am and 2pm, which offers biscuits, juice, fruit and milk.

Inpatients

Mobile phones are permitted but please remember our children are trying to rest, so please keep noise from mobile phones to a minimum (e.g. music) please use headphones. Please refrain using loudspeaker, Skype, video calling and any form of photography is strictly prohibited on the ward.

Please do not plug in mobile phone chargers or other electrical items as these may cause damage to the hospital electrical system.

If you have any problems or concerns during your stay please ask to speak to either Housekeeper, Family Worker or the Nurse in Charge if it is a nurse related problem.

Rainbow Centre also has a fully functioning playroom for 0-11 years old, an entertaining adolescent room aged 12+ and schoolroom. We also have a colorful garden for children that must be supervised to play in. 

As part of our Holistic Care approach, we provide weekly activities for children whilst in hospital. Please see the Planner for further details. 

Other facilities

A multi-faith room is available for use on the first floor of the hospital, please ask a member of staff for directions.

Visitors can also access the restaurant, based on the first floor, costa coffee, based on the ground floor health central, zone 6 and pharmacy, ground floor zone 4.

At the bedside

Curtains around the bed must be pulled back at 8.30am and only closed for dignity reasons, such as breastfeeding or changing your child or clinical consultations. It is very important that nurses can have a full view of the ward for safety reasons.

Parents’ beds must be folded away by 8.30am ready for the ward round. It is very important that the doctors and nurses are able to speak to parents and assess the child on ward round.

Please keep the bed space clean and tidy as this will reduce the risk of infection and can cause a health and safety hazard. All prams and wheelchairs to be stored in the locked waterproof shed located in the garden please ask staff for further details.

Your feedback is important, any comments and suggestions you may have are most welcome. There are comments cards placed in each reception area and throughout the hospital for you to use, if you are unable to locate please ask.

Our facilities

Overnight accommodation

We are able to offer a room to a parent it your child is staying overnight in hospital. 

Quiet room

A quiet room is available for patients and visitors who wish to pray or quietly reflect on the first floor, zone 12, of the main hospital site and on the third floor of the Gateway Surgical Centre. A pin number is required to enter the room within the main hospital. Ward staff can give you the number. Both rooms have ablution facilities.

Chaplaincy

Chaplains of many faiths are available to speak to all patients, relatives and carers. The chaplaincy team welcomes everyone, whatever your faith or beliefs and whether or not you follow a religion. The chaplains have links with many faith communities and will always try to get an appropriate representative when asked to do so. The service is confidential and respectful.

There is a payphone available in the emergency department.

Reception/information desks

There is a reception desk in the St Andrew’s Wing main hospital entrance at zone 1.

Cash machines

There are cash machines available in the main hospital building in zones 2 and 10.

Car parking

There is car parking available for all visitors near the main entrance of the hospital. The cost of this is:

  • Up to 3 hours - £2.20
  • 3 to 6 hours - £4.50
  • 6 to 8 hours - £8.00
  • Up to 24 hours - £16.50

Restaurant and coffee shops

A wide range of meals and snacks can be purchased from the eatwell restaurant, situated on the first floor, zone 4 and is open from 7am to 8pm every day.

Breakfast service is from 7am until 10am and offers a traditional full English, breakfast muffins, porridge, pastries and fresh bean to cup coffee.

Lunch service is 12pm until 2pm and includes at least three delicious hot dishes everyday including a classic ‘Home from Home’ dish and ‘Global Flavours’ a dish with authentic flavours of the world. If you fancy something lighter choose from filled baked sweet and white potatoes, homemade soup, freshly prepared salad bar or range of hot and cold sandwiches.

Dinner service is from 5.30pm until 7pm serving a choice of two home cooked meals, with a vegetarian option always available. Along with this we offer a choice of paninis, toasties, sandwiches, salads and a great selection of snacks.  

Out of these hours there is a selection of Soho sandwiches and salads, fresh bean to cup coffee, tea, cold drinks and snacks.

Light refreshments are available in the main hospital from the Fontanella coffee shop, based in zone 6 in the outpatients waiting area and is open Monday to Friday, 8am until 6pm and on the ground floor of the Gateway Surgical Centre. They offer a range of Soho sandwiches and paninis, freshly baked Danish pastries all accompanied by barista style hot and cold drinks.

The restaurant and coffee shops are open to the public, visitors, patients and staff.

Wifi

Free wifi is available throughout the hospital for patients. There’s no time limit on use, and capacity has been expanded in order to ensure continuous access for as many users as possible.

Please note that the wifi cannot support streaming movies or high-intensity computer games.
