Welcome to Newham Hospital

Newham Hospital cares for one of the most diverse populations in England.

Located in Plaistow in the vibrant East End of London, it provides all the services expected of a local hospital, including emergency care, surgery, women’s and children’s health, maternity services, specialist medicine and more.

Visiting and attending our hospital with a loved one

Visiting guidance

We are now welcoming visitors to most areas of our hospitals although some areas caring for particularly vulnerable patients may have restrictions in place.

We ask visitors coming to our hospitals to:

  • Please clean your hands when entering and exiting clinical areas and wards. You can use the hand gel provided or wash your hands.
  • Wear a hospital provided surgical facemask when visiting a patient on the ward with a respiratory illness. Universal mask wearing is no longer required, but if you would prefer to wear one these are available at hospital entrances.

Please do not visit if:

  •  you have Covid-19 symptoms or have tested positive or recently been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19
  •  you have any respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, sneezing or a sore throat
  •  you've been sick or have diarrhoea

Visiting adult inpatients

  • Two visitors are allowed at a bedside at a time across all inpatient wards.
  • Please contact the ward you wish to visit to find out their designated visiting times, which vary, depending on the type of ward. Phone numbers for our hospital wards are listed below, in the section ‘Newham Wards’.
  • Children are allowed to visit adult patients on most wards – please check prior to visiting.
  • Wards have protected mealtimes during this time visiting is discouraged, unless previously agreed to support patients to eat.

Visiting adult outpatients and the emergency department:

  • To avoid overcrowding in our outpatient departments, only one visitor is allowed to accompany a patient
  • In our emergency department (ED) and urgent treatment centre (UTC), visitors are not allowed to wait with patient in the waiting room unless they are a carer, or the patient is a child. Once the patient is moved into the department to be seen, they can be accompanied by one visitor.

Visiting our children's ward

  • If you would like to visit a patient on our children's ward (Rainbow ward), please contact the team directly to make arrangements.

Visiting maternity patients

Delivery suite and birth centre

Two birth partners for labour and birth. No children in these wards.

Antenatal and postnatal wards

Women and birthing people can have two adults visiting at one time between 8am and 8pm. These two people don't have to be the birth partners, and can swap. Overnight, between 8pm and 8am, one person can stay with the woman/birthing person - we would prefer this person not to swap throughout the night. No children can be on the antenatal and postnatal wards.

Maternity triage and assessment unit

One adult can accompany women and birthing people. We continue to encourage people to make alternative childcare arrangements and not to bring their children with them.

Outpatient appointments

Two people can accompany women and birthing people to outpatient appointments, such as booking, antenatal and scan appointments. We continue to encourage people to make alternative childcare arrangements and not to bring their children with them, but children can accompany in special circumstances.

Visiting guidance for people receiving end-of-life care

  • Visiting restrictions for patients receiving end of life care will be kept to a minimum. Please contact the nurse in charge to discuss this.
  • Chaplaincy can also be requested to attend the bedside in the last days of life.
