Hello my name is Faye and I work as an administrator in the antenatal clinic at Newham Hospital. I am 29 years young and I am an out and proud lesbian of colour.

For Pride Month, Bart’s Health LGBTQ+ Network’s newly appointed Pride Rep, Jess Alexander, gives us an insight into her role at Barts Health, and explains why Pride Month is important to her.

For Pride Month, St Bartholomew’s LGBTQ+ and allies’ network co-lead Darren Barnes reflects on what the network has achieved over the last year and provides some personal thoughts on being LGBTQ+ in the NHS. 

We caught up with Ann Ellis, the Parent Education Manager at Barts Health, who provided us with an insight into what the maternity team have been up to during the pandemic. Ann has been facilitating the antenatal classes for 30 years and loves meeting new people in the process.

From my experience, conversations at work on race and equality issues are less likely to be had as people can feel uncomfortable. In my opinion it is extremely important that we start having these conversations to  root out any prejudices and biases that we may subconsciously or consciously have towards our patients and colleagues.

I have experienced quite a few challenges with my transition from soldier to civilian. I certainly wouldn’t be where I am today without perseverance, keeping an open mind, and the support of management to pursue personal development opportunities.
