Memorial bench a fitting tribute for Jeff
Last week, we received the delivery of a very special bench in memory of Jeff Edwards, a porter who worked at Whipps Cross for over 35 years, who sadly passed away at the beginning of the year.
Jeff’s family, alongside other porters from Whipps Cross, raised money for a bench to be installed at the hospital in his memory. Jeff loved his job and he was a larger-than-life character who was known by everyone that worked at the hospital, so it is a fitting tribute for him.
Jeff was a mentor for new porters and would advise them on the ways of the portering department, without appearing to be dictatorial. Porters related to his personality and his managers always looked to him for his experience. He will be remembered for his decades-long commitment and dedication to the rights and conditions of his fellow porters.
Jeff’s bench is situated in the pond area, which you can see from the main corridor. We held a small dedication service for Jeff when the bench was delivered and also held a remembrance service in our chapel.
Jeff always had a smile on his face, and nothing was too much trouble for him – because he loved working in the hospital and conversing with all members of staff he came into contact with. He was a kind and thoughtful man, who always brought laughter to all.
If you would like to share your condolences you can leave your message in our virtual memorial garden.
