Local residents asked for their views on Whipps Cross Hospital redevelopment proposals

A brand new, state of the art, hospital could be built within a garden setting under plans for the redevelopment of Whipps Cross.

Residents are being asked for their views on the emerging hospital designs and on transforming the site – with proposals imagining a new neighbourhood with homes, health and wellbeing facilities and public spaces seamlessly connected to the forest and town centres around it.

The hospital will have the same core services as now, including A&E and maternity, but also be a centre of expertise for the frail and elderly.

It will look very different though, with wards arranged around a central hub, making it easy to find your way around, and plenty of access to green spaces and fresh air.

Patient care and dignity will be a priority with more single rooms and garden terraces providing therapeutic and healing benefits for patients and an uplifting environment for staff.

The proposals echo the founding vision of the original Whipps Cross Hospital over century ago when it was deliberately located on the edge of Epping Forest.

New access routes with more emphasis on walking and cycling are also being proposed as part of preparations for a planning application to be submitted next year.

Alastair Finney, Redevelopment  Director, said: “Our vision for the future is of a hospital in a garden, and a garden in the hospital. We want to hear what local people think about our emerging plans for the estate and its environment so we ensure they meet the needs and aspirations of patients and the public for years to come.”
