
Dr Thomas Powles
Consultant at St Bartholomew's HospitalThomas Powles is the director of Barts Cancer Centre, one of the largest centres of its kind in the United Kingdom. He trained as an oncologist at Imperial College.
He has written over 300 research papers and leads the European treatment guidelines (ESMO) for bladder and kidney cancer. He has led research that has resulted in the approval of several cancer therapies.
His current work focuses on early bladder and kidney cancer.
In 2023 he was named in Nature's 10, a list of the most influential global scientists.
Research interests
Professor Powles has had a major role in the development of biomarkers and new drug strategies in urology cancers. This includes multiple EMA and FDA approvals. He authors over 40 peer-reviewed publications per year. He has presented plenary data at major global meetings.
