Two trailblazing colleagues named amongst RCN’s Rising Star awards
This October, to mark Black History Month, RCN London have recognised nurses across London who have made an outstanding contribution to the health and care of our communities.
This year two colleagues were recognised for their dedication and commitment to providing world-class patient care. Ibiadukuka Paul-Worika from The Royal London Hospital and Tambudzayi Madakudya from St Bartholomew’s Hospital were both named as part of the 22 rising stars!
Meet Ibi
A paediatric nurse trainer and educator for the Tower Hamlets Community Children Nursing Team, Ibi is an extremely passionate colleague. Recently, she led on the successful bid for WellChild Better at Home resources which allowed her team to purchase interactive manikins to aid training for staff and parents.
Through this, she identified that once children and young people are discharged from hospital, families do not always get the opportunity to have refresher sessions for basic life support training. As a result, Ibi organised regular sessions for parents to attend, with feedback from families being overwhelmingly positive.
As well as making an impact on patient and families lives, Ibi is also part of our career mentoring programme and works with colleagues to provide guidance and support in addressing development needs so that they can reach their full potential at work.
She is passionate about raising awareness amongst staff about the impact ethnicity and socio-economic deprivation has on health inequalities.
Speaking of her recognition, Ibi said:
It’s a privilege to work in the team and I feel incredibly honoured to have been nominated by my colleagues. I am passionate about the health and wellbeing of children, and this award will only make me more determined and more focused to support children, young people and their families.
Meet Tambu
Tambu joined us in 2016 as a healthcare assistant in our haematological cancer ward team. In 2019, Tambu was successful in securing a place on the funded nursing associate apprenticeship, and following completion registered as a nursing associate in 2021.
Since her registration, and with the close support of her ward manager, Tambu has grown in confidence and has taken on a nutrition link nursing role to ensure the nutritional needs of patients are consistently met.
Tambu ensures that nutrition scores are consistently completed to a high standard, liaises with the dietetics team, and leads on the protected mealtime’s monthly audit. Recently the ward was recognised for the highest MUST (Malnutrition Universal Screening Score) compliance due to Tambu’s effort in teaching and encouraging staff to do their food charts.
Tambu aspires to continue her development into a registered nursing role in the future and with the support of her leader.
