There were cheers and tears aplenty last night (12 October) at the 2021 Royal College of Nursing Institute (RCNi) Awards as The Royal London Hospital’s Adult Critical Care Unit (ACCU) team won ‘Team of the Year’.

Recognised for their tireless work and high-quality care during the Covid-19 pandemic, the ACCU team received a significant proportion of London’s critically ill Covid-19 patients.

It became clear very quickly that they would have to go above and beyond to make sure all patients were given the best care possible.

A speedy remodelling of nursing care was delivered by the 200 substantive critical care nursing staff and more than 400 redeployed staff, who came from all the hospitals in the Barts Health group to support.

The Queen Elizabeth Unit was opened on the 15th floor of the hospital and expanded in record time. At its peak the unit was able to care for 157 seriously ill patients.

Despite the unprecedented circumstances they were faced with, the ACCU team stepped up to the challenge and provided the chance of life and recovery to so many patients and their families.

As of today (13.10.21), 19,127 inpatients hospitalised at Barts Health hospitals with confirmed Covid-19 have recovered and been discharged.

Nicola Rudkin, Deputy Associate Director of Nursing for Surgery at The Royal London Hospital said: “This award for the ACCU team is so hugely deserved and I am delighted that their work, care and dedication had been recognised in this way. This team has given so much in immensely challenging circumstances, but throughout have continually strived to do their best for their patients, their families and each other. This award rightly celebrates them, alongside all of the honorary Team ACCU members, redeployed staff, volunteers and support teams who came together to respond to this most enormous challenge. I am very proud of them and I hope they get to celebrate in a manner befitting of their achievement”.

Susana Lucena-Amaro, Matron at The Royal London Hospital said: “Our team are our biggest asset and this award is a credit to their courage, professionalism and commitment to patient care in the most challenging circumstances. This success is not due to chance but the reflection of their expertise and unfailing kindness towards patients and most importantly, towards each other.”
