Finance Director of the Year
Congratulations to Hardev Virdee, our group chief finance officer, on receiving one of the highest accolades his professional peers can bestow.
He was named Finance Director of the Year at the annual awards of the Healthcare Finance Management Association, the professional body for finance staff working in healthcare.
The award recognises not only his work at Barts Health, but also the key role he plays within the wider healthcare system of north east London, and his influence in the NHS across the capital.
It comes as the NHS is facing arguably its biggest financial challenge so far, with all acute providers tasked with recovering productivity levels after the pandemic while simultaneously facing unprecedented levels of industrial action.
Hardev has day-to-day oversight of a budget of £2.4bn, one of the biggest in the NHS and larger than some countries. He joined the trust in 2020, shortly before we came out of financial special measures, and has since steered the organisation towards financial sustainability.
However he was nominated for the HFMA award on the strength of his efforts to promote training and development for finance staff, support emerging talent in the organisation, and develop opportunities for young people in our communities.
The submission described him as “A popular and compassionate leader who is as passionate about advancing equity for all staff as he is championing the cause of the finance function.”
He is a member of the NHS England management and leadership advisory group, a trustee of the Power to Change charity, sits on the King’s Fund advisory forum, and chairs the workforce forum of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy.
