Colleagues win big at the Black Healthcare Awards
On Saturday, three colleagues secured a prize at the Black Healthcare Awards 2024.
About the awards
Since the inception of the NHS, many Black Caribbean and African people have been the backbone of our NHS, playing a central role in health and care services in a range of sectors all over the UK.
The awards are the first to focus solely on Black healthcare professionals of the Caribbean or African diaspora. The Healthcare Awards recognise individuals who have established themselves as outstanding in their practice, with unrivalled determination to make a difference to all.
Who are our winners?
Three of our colleagues took home awards on the night and were recognised for their oustanding contributions to healthcare.
- Mary Turay-Olusile, associate director of midwifery and gynaecology at Whipps Cross Hospital
Received the Dunkley-Bent Midwifery Leadership Award which recognises those that have influenced or impacted a change or improvement through their decision making within their organisation or area of practice.
Speaking of the award, Mary said:
I am proud and honoured to be awarded for what I enjoy doing [...] It has been tough at times, but rewarding working with the Whipps Cross maternity team.
A huge gratitude to Barts Health as I trained and stayed (home grown). My whole midwifery career has been here apart from when I lectured at City, so Barts Health should be proud.
- Professor Frank Chinegwundoh, consultant urologist at Newham Hospital
Received the Lifetime Achievement Award which honours those who have given their life’s career to healthcare to enable improved services and outcomes for those they provide care for. He was recognised for the work he has done in raising awareness of the increased risk of prostate cancer in Black men.
Speaking of the award, he said:
I was honoured to receive a lifetime achievement award at the inaugural Caribbean and African Healthcare awards ceremony. It was unexpected as I did not know that I was nominated in this category.
It is humbling to be recognised by your peers in the healthcare space for one’s efforts over so many years.
- Jenise Jarvis, midwifery matron at Newham Hospital
Received the Midwife of the Year Award which recognises a lead midwife whose initiative, creative and innovative approach has created improved user care for women, birthing people and their families from diverse backgrounds.
Ajit Abraham, consultant trauma and HPB surgeon and group director of inclusion and equity congratulated the winners:
Congratulations to our outstanding colleagues Jenise, Mary, and Frank on their richly deserved recognition at the 2024 CAHN awards. It’s wonderful to see their hard work and dedication celebrated. We are fortunate to have them on Team Barts Health.
Congratulations, all! 🎉
