The work of the trauma teams at The Royal London Hospital will feature in ‘Emergency’ a new documentary series on Channel 4.
Broadcast over four consecutive nights from Monday 28 February on Channel 4 at 9pm, the series looks at the work of London’s Major Trauma Network. The network is made up of four major trauma centres (The Royal London, King’s College, St George’s and St Mary’s hospitals), trauma units, ambulance and air ambulance services, who work together to provide highly specialised care to critically injured patients.
Filmed during two busy weeks during summer 2021, the series follows the minute-by-minute decisions made by medics as they treat the most critically injured patients. Following patients through the trauma pathway, from roadside interventions, through resus to intensive care, and surgery to rehabilitation to reflect the variety of specialist treatment that goes into saving patients’ lives and putting them back together again.
London’s major trauma network was the first network of its kind, launched in 2010 and developed in response to continued poor outcomes for trauma patients in the UK.
Since it started, survival rates for those with major trauma have more than doubled and the network has also helped to improve outcomes for patients through the care they receive, both to treat injuries and rehabilitate them to enable a to return to their normal lives.
Dr Anne Weaver, Clinical Director for Trauma at The Royal London Hospital and Consultant in Emergency Medicine & Prehospital Care with London’s Air Ambulance, said: “London’s Major Trauma System exists to serve critically injured patients across London and the south-east, providing rapid access to specialised care, which for over a decade has demonstrably improved survival rates in this population.
“‘Emergency’ demonstrates how the compassionate and excellent care provided to trauma patients throughout their journey to recovery.”
