Renal team celebrates World Kidney Day | Our news

We had a fantastic time celebrating World Kidney Day; the annual event which promotes kidney health. Now in its 12th year, World Kidney Day gave us the opportunity to share information on healthy eating and how to look after your kidneys, as well as to hear from patients about their experiences following a kidney transplant. It was great to see so many familiar faces and to see our patients raising awareness with us. 

We're very proud of our renal unit - one of the largest in the country with an international reputation for our patient-centred treatments and a highly regarded kidney transplantation programme. To help raise awareness of kidney transplantation, we ran stalls which gave information on organ donation for anyone considering signing up. And we provided information on participating in clinical research trials and how access to new drugs can lead to better outcomes. Plus the obligatory share of freebies!

The week was also an opportunity to celebrate the life of Ronnie Moodley, who presented to the renal service 10 years ago in 2008. Since his transfer onto haemodialysis in 2011 he was instrumental in raising awareness about diabetes and kidney disease both within the service but also more widely in his local community. 

Thank you to all who came to participate in World Kidney Day 2018 – we had a great time sharing information and raising the profile of kidney health. 

And a huge congratulation to Helen Rainey - Clinical Nurse Specialist for Chronic Kidney Disease (Renal Nurse of the year) who goes above and beyond her duties to support her patient’s and  Paula Allchorne (Urology Nurse of the Year) who won the British Journal of Nursing for their outstanding contribution to healthcare. We are all very proud to have you in our service!
