News from Newham

  1. Contrast:

We're back!

After 2 years, we opened our doors to show members of the public some of the services we offer, the care we provide, the opportunity to meet our wonderful staff and the chance to inspire more people – particularly you people – to come and work in our wonderful organisation.

Our open day on 5 July – which was also the NHS 74 birthday – featured a whopping 25 stalls from teams across the hospital. Together, they provided a useful insight into how Newham Hospital and the wider NHS works.

Some stalls, such as simulation, imaging, therapies and the emergency department, brought their services to life using machinery and mannequins, giving people the opportunity to carry out CPR and see how a scan works!

Our staff EDI networks highlighted how they advocate to make sure everyone who works at Newham Hospital and across Barts Health feels comfortable bringing their whole self to work, while our Chaplaincy team showcased the support they offer to staff and to patients and their families while they are in our hospital.

We also had stalls from external organisations that we work closely with, including Healthwatch Newham and Barts Charity, to show the importance of collaboration with others in providing and delivering high-quality care.

Not all work and no play!

While a large part of the day was about showcasing the fantastic work our staff do and informing the public about the wide variety of services we offer, we did have a bit of fun as well!

We had cake to mark the NHS 74 birthday and were treated to a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ and other wonderful music by members of the London Symphony Orchestra. The Barts Radio team also provided some great tunes throughout the day that got everyone in the mood!

Our friends at London Search and Rescue brought along four of their working dogs who really did steal the show; Miss Balloniverse made crowns and statues galore; and our photobooth went down a treat! Thank you all for providing such fantastic entertainment.

And thank you to the wonderful team from Serco who provided refreshing ice lollies throughout the day and Elior who kept us hydrated with fresh orange juice.

We also speeches from Simon Ashton, acting CEO of Newham Hospital, Dame Alwen Williams, the outgoing CEO for Barts Health and Shane DeGaris, the incoming CEO for Barts Health and Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital Trust.

Speaking on the event, Simon Ashton, acting CEO of Newham Hospital said: “Attending our hospital’s first open day in two years was amazing. It was fantastic to welcome members of our community and local schools back after two years, and to see so many of our hospital teams showcasing the services we offer and the care we provide. There was a brilliant atmosphere and a great sense of community, and it made me feel prouder than ever to work in such a brilliant hospital. Thanks to everyone who made the day a real success.”

Thank you to all involved in making the day possible – from the planning team and those who managed the stalls to the Barts Health volunteers and porters who helped with setting up and running the event – and to anyone else involved in helping in any way!
