Staff talk to BBC London News about balancing planned care alongside Covid-19 pressures
Teams from The Royal London and Newham hospitals spoke to BBC London News about their experience treating Covid-19 patients and those waiting for planned procedures at the same time.
Ward manager Mark O’Halloran and consultant orthopaedic surgeon Steve Millington were interviewed by Karl Mercer about their patients’ relief at receiving treatment after delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
One Newham Hospital patient Jean Jones expressed her excitement at being discharged and making a steady recovery from recent shoulder surgery.
At The Royal London Hospital, matron Susana Lucena and senior charge nurse Robert Christie talked about the effect of the third wave on Queen Elizabeth intensive care unit where they both work and how they’re balancing Covid and non-Covid demand.
Oumatee Madhoosingh, a ward manager, and Patricia Twum, a staff nurse, who both work on the 13th floor of the hospital, talked about their worry that things may worsen again this winter.
Finally, Raj Thuraisingham, divisional director of specialist medicine, expanded on the hospital’s Covid-19 capacity and outlined the ratio of unvaccinated to vaccinated patients currently being admitted to the hospital.
