Invitation to EXPOSURE

You are cordially invited to watch EXPOSURE – the latest exhibition from the artist known as ‘the vacuum cleaner’ (aka James Leadbitter). The content for the exhibition was developed in collaboration with our very own Dr Emma Young, Newham Borough health workers and many more.

In the Autumn of 2020, between the first and second waves of the pandemic, 'the vacuum cleaner' filmed 47 health workers in the Borough of Newham. From ward clarks and members of the council’s public health team to Newham Hospital’s medical director, he asked them a series of simple questions about their experiences of the first wave of the pandemic, questions including ‘what was the most challenging moment during the first wave?’ and ‘what was the most beautiful?’.

Now, the team behind EXPOSURE want to share some of these experiences with you and the public in an evening that combines film, stories and original sounds. The production will be running from 14 to 30 October 2021 as part of the Newham Unlocked & Royal Docks Originals Festivals and it promises to be a fantastic event, where we remember the details of a truly extraordinary time, population and place.

You’ve got the choice of two venues to view the exhibition – Applecart Arts (E13 0SE) or the Royal Docks Learning & Activity Centre (E16 2JB).

Tickets are free and subject to availability. But book yours sooner rather than later – capacity is limited for each performance to allow for social distancing. All performances will be relaxed and the venue spaces are wheelchair accessible. Audience members are encouraged to wear face masks.

  • To book at Applecart Arts (running 14-22 October)
  • To book at the Royal Docks Learning & Activity Centre (running 27-30 October)

Due to the subject matter, the production contains content that some may find distressing including death from Covid 19, mental health, pregnancy loss and racism. As such, age guidance for this production is 14+.

Listen to our very own Dr Emma Young speak about what it was like to be involved in the project on BBC Radio London (start at 32 minutes in).
