I have been a consultant thoracic surgeon for 11 years, and am the director of robotic thoracic surgery at Barts Health.My aim is to provide the best in patient care and recovery, as well as excellence in training, using the latest technology and innovative practices.

I am the UK lead consultant for robotic thoracic surgery having pioneered this technique in this country, with a strong background in minimally-invasive surgery.I have helped set up many different units using this platform in the UK and in Europe as I regularly teach here and abroad.I am a founding member of the European Thoracic Robotic Surgery Group.I was the lead clinician for NHS England looking at the commissioning of this surgery, having been the North-East Senator for the clinical reference group in thoracic surgery.I sit on the Royal College of Surgeons committee into the future of surgery using technology as the thoracic surgery lead as a representative of all the UK departments.30% of thoracic departments in the UK have a robotic practice now. This platform is designed to improve patients’ recovery, reducing the trauma to them when they have major chest surgery, and so a key area I am working on is patient-related outcome measures and quality of life, and am principal investigator for the first robotic thoracic surgery research in the UK.

I have been the regional training committee chair for cardiothoracic surgery in my previous consultant post in the north-east and, having moved to Barts Health, have aimed to uphold the longstanding training reputation of the Hospital and to take that further ensuring an excellence in training, having the first clinical research fellow in robotic thoracic surgery in the UK, giving all higher surgical trainees an immersive experience in this type of surgery and working with them to achieve their individual career aims.I am an examiner for the Intercollegiate Specialty Cardiothoracic Surgery exam ensuring the highest standards of senior trainees before they become consultants.I have worked hard to support the junior doctors, by the implementation of a non-medical workforce, allowing more access to theatre and training for them.
