Dr Iro is a Consultant in Paediatric infectious diseases (ID) and immunology at the Royal London Hospital (RLH), Barts NHS Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Blizard Institute Queen Mary University of London.
Dr Iro trained in Paediatrics and Paediatric ID and immunology in South East England and had most of her training at the University Hospital Southampton.
Prior to joining the RLH (2018 - 2022), Dr Iro was appointed to a highly competitive NIHR-funded Academic Clinical Lecturer post in Child Health and Genomics at the University of Southampton. In this time, she was awarded Associate Fellow for the Higher Education Academy.
Dr Iro completed a DPhil programme at the University of Oxford (2013 - 2018), leading on the first ever multicentre trial of intravenous immunoglobulin for the treatment of all-cause childhood encephalitis.
Dr Iro is passionate about conducting research to answer key questions aimed at improving outcomes for children with infections. Dr Iro has over 10 years’ experience of leading and delivering clinical trials, including vaccine trials, and is Principal Investigator for several clinical trials (Phase 2 to 4) at the RLH.
Dr Iro has authored several research papers (and first author for over 15 of these) in highly reputable journals such as the Lancet Infectious Diseases Journal. Dr Iro was awarded the prestigious Royal College for Paediatrics and Child Health Lorber Prize for best paediatric publication in 2017.
Dr Iro has also presented at several national and international conferences and contributed to the development of international clinical guidelines.
Dr Iro is keen about medical education and providing mentorship.
