Ben is a consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon at Barts Health and UCLH NHS Trusts. He is based at The Royal London Hospital. Ben oversees the prostate cancer diagnostic and treatment services at Barts Health and regularly sees men with prostate cancer to discuss their diagnosis and help them to get the right treatment. He performs retzius sparing robotic radical prostatectomy at UCLH for patients from across London and trains other surgeons from around the world in this technique.

Research interests

  • Since his PhD in 2009, Ben has made a significant contribution to research in the field of multidisciplinary cancer teams (MDTs).
  • He has led research that has increased understanding of decision-making in MDT meetings, as well as the development of validated tools for MDT improvement, which have been used to train hundreds of tumour board members across the UK and overseas.
  • His research is cited in UK national Gastroenterology, Breast cancer and Gynecology guidelines.
  • In 2021, as a member of the BAUS section of oncology executive committee, he led national guidance for UK urology MDTs
  • He has developed training programs for MDT leaders and MDT coordinators, delivered to hundreds of healthcare professionals.
  • Ben is passionate about improving care for men with prostate cancer.
  • Many men undergoing surgical treatment of prostate cancer have significant sexual and urinary side effects.
  • Ben has led work on improving treatment decisions using decision aids, so that men can make better decisions about treatment
  • He has documented his use of retzius sparing robotic prostatectomy, a novel surgical technique to improve recovery of urinary incontinence
  • Ben has also published the implementation of new methods of improving the management of erectile dysfunction after prostate cancer surgery
