Find a consultant

Our consultant directory offers information on who our consultants are, their specialities and where they are based.

If you have an enquiry relating to your appointment or your treatment, you should contact the relevant department instead of your individual consultant to ensure that our clinical support team can provide you with the right support to your enquiry in a timely manner.

Dr Oliver Segal

Consultant cardiologist & electrophysiologist at St Bartholomew's Hospital

Dr Segal graduated from King’s College in 1995. He trained in Cardiology at Barts and London Chest Hospitals with specialist postgraduate training in electrophysiology & devices at St. Mary’s, The Heart (UCLH) and St. George’s Hospitals. He completed a Fellowship in Electrophysiology in Canada in 2007 and was awarded a doctorate on mapping ventricular arrhythmias at Imperial College in 2008, having won the Young Investigator Award for this in the 2004 US Heart Rhythm Society.
He was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at The Heart Hospital in 2008, moving to the Barts in April 2015 when services transferred. Dr Segal is lead for electrophysiology at UCLH and runs weekly clinics.

Treatments and procedures

Oliver Segal is an expert in treating heart rhythm problems.

His practice covers all aspects of the investigation and treatment of arrhythmia, including drug treatment, catheter ablation and device therapy with pacemakers, CRT and defibrillators. He also implants leadless pacemakers and LAAO devices.

He performs the following procedures:

  • Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF), atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), ventricular premature beats (‘ectopics’) and ventricular tachycardia.
  • Device implantation – pacemakers (including leadless pacemakers)
  • Defibrillators (ICDs)
  • Cardiac resynchronisation therapy for heart failure (CRT-P & CRT-D)
  • Device extraction
  • Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) devices for people with AF who cannot take anticoagulants safely

Research interests

Dr Segal has undertaken research in numerous areas of electrophysiology and devices, including AF ablation, mapping and ablation of ventricular tachycardia, created an algorithm to detect VT origin from ECG morphology, developed a novel pacing manoeuvre to diagnose different types of SVT, developed a clinical risk score to identify responders to CRT devices and in the areas of left atrial appendage occlusion devices and leadless pacing. He continues to work in these areas as well as in the field of myotonic dystrophy and the heart.
