Dr Paolo Gallipoli

Consultant at St Bartholomew's Hospital

Dr Gallipoli is a clinical academic haematologist with expertise in the biology and therapy of myeloid leukaemias. He studied Medicine in Italy, at University of Naples “Federico II” and then moved to the UK for his postgraduate training. He obtained his PhD, funded by a Medical Research Council UK fellowship, in Prof Holyoake lab in Glasgow, studying resistance mechanism of Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) stem cells to BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitors. He then moved to University of Cambridge to complete specialty training in Haematology and worked as a Wellcome Trust funded Clinical Post-doctoral Fellow within Prof Brian Huntly lab where he has developed an independent research line focusing on the role of adaptive metabolic changes in the pathogenesis and therapy resistance of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).

Dr Gallipoli is clinically active at Consultant level and regularly attends both the myeloid firm clinic at St Barts and the ward looking after patients with myeloid leukemias and disorders.

Treatments and procedures

Myeloid leukemias diagnosis, follow-up and therapy including treatment with novel therapies, immunotherapies and bone marrow transplant.

Research interests

Dr Gallipoli is heavily involved in myeloid leukemias research and runs his own research group at Barts Cancer Institute studying the biology of AML. This is funded primarily by a Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Advanced Clinician Scientist Fellowship and studies the role of non-genetic adaptations in therapy resistance in AML. He and his group aim to identify novel therapies which can then be  brought to the clinic. Dr Gallipoli has also experience in clinical trials set-up, running and reporting as outlined in his CV and publication record@

  • Dr Gallipoli is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at QMUL
  • Dr Gallipoli is member of both the UK National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) CML and AML Working Group and he is also member of the UK AML NCRI Scientific Working Group to develop translational science from the trial work
  • Dr Gallipoli is involved in teaching and education in both St Barts Hospital and QMUL
