"This award is like winning the Euromillion"
Royal London midwife receives national recognition
Stella Simon-Brown, midwife at the Royal London Hospital for over 20 years, has been awarded a national silver award by the Chief Midwifery Officer for England.
Stella started her career at Barts Health NHS Trust as a domestic worker, then moved on to a healthcare assistant role, and nurse before completing training to become a qualified midwife in 2005. Since then she has worked in all areas of midwifery, including leading the fetal medicine unit, and provided and excellent care for east London’s women and babies.
During a surprise visit to the maternity department this week, Kate Brintworth, Chief Midwifery Officer at NHS England awarded Stella with the special recognition. The award recognises the contribution of nurses and midwives to patients and the profession which goes above and beyond.
On receiving the award, Stella said:
“I feel really privileged to be a midwife practicing at Royal London Hospital. This award is like winning the Euromillion. This recognition is not just for me but for all my colleagues throughout the maternity unit who come here every day through thick and thin to provide an outstanding service to our clients no matter the circumstance.“
Caroline Alexander, Chief Nurse at Barts Health said:
“Stella is a unique force for good and we are incredibly proud that she works here at the Royal London Hospital.
She is totally focussed on the experience of women and her positivity, role modelling and peer influence – even at times of significant pressure - makes a real difference every day.
Stella always receives lovely feedback from women who she has cared - she even has women asking for her when they are attending in labour. Every interaction I have had with her over the last 7 years has been positive and she is an outstanding role model for career progression and what can be achieved.
