Delivering care above and beyond the NHS: How Barts Charity helped me
Hello my name is Seyi and I’m a senior physiotherapist at Newham University Hospital.
I first found out about Barts Charity back in 2015, when our outpatient physiotherapy team at Royal London Hospital won a Barts Heroes Award for best team! The ceremony really highlighted the role of the Charity across the Trust.
Since then Barts Charity have been instrumental in a number of projects within the physiotherapy teams across the Trust, including training and courses that help us support our patients better. Most recently, the Charity granted us the means to re-equip the Therapies Gym at Newham Hospital.
Enhancing equipment, improving lives
We have a great space that is used by Outpatients, Stroke Rehab, Amputees and Cardiac Rehab. However, a lot of the equipment was old, damaged and frankly no longer appropriate for patient use. With the money from Barts Charity we have been able to buy brand new, high quality equipment that is used by all of those teams to serve their patients.
With the improved surroundings patients are more motivated to work towards their goals and we are seeing improved outcomes and a better standard care for all our patient groups.
Should I apply to Barts Charity?
Seeing what Barts Charity can do for you is definitely worthwhile. If you have a specific project or a funding need that your departmental budget can’t stretch to, it may well be worth considering. Identify exactly what the need is and get a team together to create a bid and see what happens – it’s been really positive for our service.
I found the Barts Charity team really helpful. They were always on hand to support and advise ways to progress things.
