Everyone has the right to feel respected, valued and safe

I have been deeply shocked and saddened by the murder of Sarah Everard who went missing on her way home on 3 March. On behalf of the board, I’d like to again reiterate our commitment to creating an inclusive community, where everyone has the right to feel respected, valued and safe.

In our launch of the WeBelong strategy last year, we made a commitment to eliminating discrimination, ensuring equality of opportunity and promoting good relations between all people.

Over 71% of TeamBartsHealth are women and we celebrated the contribution our women have made last week at the International Women’s Day event. However there is still more to be done, and as we’ve seen with the #BlackLivesMatter movement, our voices need to be heard and our actions need to count to create a more inclusive world for everyone.

At home in the UK, one in four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime and two women are murdered every week. The public response to this appalling crime, including the protests that followed the cancelled #ReclaimTheseStreets vigil over the weekend, makes it really clear: everyone should feel safe in their homes and on our streets.

We have support on WeShare if you feel upset or unsafe. The women's network will also be discussing these issues at a future webinar; you are all welcome to join.
