St Bartholomew’s is best, say heart trainees

Cardiology trainees at St Bartholomew's Hospital

St Bartholomew’s Hospital is the best place to train in the UK.

That’s according to a survey of trainee heart doctors.

The hospital beat a number of other specialist centres to scoop the award, which is voted for by members of the British Junior Cardiologists Association (BJCA).

Respondents praised the quality of teaching and opportunities to progress.

One trainee said: “A week at Barts is equivalent to six months elsewhere.

“The opportunities are endless and we are encouraged to take them.”

Another praised the “excellent breadth of opportunities” and “encouraging attitude to research and management placements.”

Group chief executive Alwen Williams said it was “fantastic recognition”, whilst St Bartholomew’s chief executive Professor Charles Knight called it a “very proud achievement.”

Director of medical education for our Barts Heart Centre Professor Mark Westwood said: “We are thrilled to receive this award.

"Across the entire multiprofessional team at St Bartholomew's, we have put the training and education of staff at the very centre of our philosophy of high quality, patient focussed care for which this award signals a ringing endorsement."

Meanwhile consultant cardiologist Dr Martin Thomas was named trainer of the year in the heart failure category.

The BJCA champions training and education for cardiology trainees.

It has more than 1,400 members across the UK.

St Bartholomew’s has around junior doctors within its cardiology department.

It was successful in the ‘President’s teaching award for best training hospital (surgical centre)’.
