Top award for Dr Treibel
St Bartholomew’s consultant Dr Thomas Treibel has won a major research prize.
The Michael Davies Early Career Award honours researchers who have established themselves as independent investigators and made an outstanding contribution to cardiovascular science.
It is given by the British Cardiovascular Society and named in honour of Professor Michael Davies, a British Heart Foundation professor of cardiac pathology and former editor of British cardiovascular journal Heart.
Thomas is an academic consultant cardiologist at our Barts Heart Centre and associate professor in cardiology at University College London’s Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences.
He has a specialist interest in aortic stenosis which is caused by narrowing of one of the main heart valves.
When the narrowing becomes severe, replacing the valve is the only treatment to prevent death but many patients are left with permanent damage.
He said: “I am really honoured to be recognised with this prize, especially as Prof Davies identified changes in the failing heart caused by aortic stenosis that we will hopefully be able to treat more effectively in the future."
The award, which is sponsored by the British Heart Foundation, was presented this month at the British Cardiovascular Society Annual Conference.
