Our team offer treatment for all types of injury, from initial resuscitation to rehabilitation.
We are made up of a wide range of trauma specialists, including: surgeons, anaesthetists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses and psychologists.
As part of London’s Major Trauma Network, we work closely with other hospitals and colleagues in providing trauma care across the entire region, and a violence reduction and police liasion team are embedded in our wards.
We have also pioneered new approaches to save lives from severe injuries through our Transform Trauma program, funded by Barts Charity.
Ward 12D is the first dedicated major trauma ward in the UK. The ward is made up of doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, and other allied health professionals. The ward has 17 beds as well as a treatment room for minor procedures, and exercise facilities to aid patients with rehabilitation. We often receive patients directly from A&E, or after they are discharged from critical care. Our priority is to deliver expert care with respect and compassion, without prejudice or judgement.
Trauma Surgery is led by a team of specialist surgeons dedicated to the management of injured patients. As well as performing operations, they lead the daily multidisciplinary team meetings and ward rounds, and oversee training and governance activities within the service.
The Royal London Trauma Anaesthesia Group (TAG) is a specialised team within the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, focused on providing expert anaesthetic care for trauma patients.
The team is essential to the major trauma service, managing critically injured patients in the emergency department and during complex surgeries. They provide advanced resuscitation, airway management, sedation, pain control, and perioperative care.
TAG contributions extend beyond direct clinical care; they are involved in research, education, and the development of best practices in trauma anaesthesia. The group actively participates in trauma care protocol development and has contributed to advancements in trauma anaesthesia techniques, especially in pre-hospital and emergency settings. They are also engaged in training and mentoring anaesthetic professionals and ensuring high standards in trauma care across the major trauma centre.
The after trauma team is made up of experienced nurses and therapists who will support you and your family during your stay here. We provide a 7 day service, and are happy to be contacted between 8am and 5pm. The team can support you, your family, and friends during what can be a difficult time in your life. They can also help answer any questions you have about your injuries, plan rehabilitation, and offer welfare advice and direct you to legal services. Learn more about after trauma care.

Research
We are the primary clinical partner of the Centre for Trauma Sciences, a world-leading centre of excellence for translational research at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London. The centre focuses on understanding how people respond to severe injuries and developing new treatments to improve outcomes from trauma. We have a clinical research team embedded within the service, and a laboratory capable of performing advanced diagnostic techniques is located on the major trauma ward.
