Whipps Cross Hospital Redevelopment: Building a Brighter Future for Whipps Cross

We’re at an exciting stage of progressing our plans for a brand new hospital for our patients, our staff and our communities.

Find out more in our update video from Alastair Finney, Whipps Cross Redevelopment Director:

The Whipps Cross Hospital Redevelopment is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform the hospital and wider site to serve the community for generations to come.

The hospital will provide the same core services as today including A and E and maternity but we’re planning to improve the way services are delivered for patients. For example, more patients will be seen and treated without the need for overnight admission with:

  • a new dedicated same day emergency care unit, supported by significant increases in our diagnostic activity with around 90% more CT and MRI scans and a near doubling of the number of CT and MRI scanners
  • around 10,000 more day cases, with a near 50% increase of day case spaces in the  new hospital

The new hospital will:

  • have more clinical space than today, with over 70% of the hospital devoted to clinical activities, compared to around 50% today and around 70% single rooms compared to 17% today
  • be digitally enabled – with self check in for patients, smart beds and 50% of all outpatient appointments delivered virtually

The new hospital will support us to manage our bed capacity much more effectively, for example through a new digital command centre, giving real time data on patient flow, minimising the time between admission and discharge. The hospital’s flexible design and the additional space identified next to the hospital - means we are able to adapt our plans to increase the number of beds if necessary.

We submitted our planning application earlier this year and expect a decision in the autumn. Subject to business case and planning approvals we continue to anticipate the completion of the new hospital by the end of 2026.
