Sheila and Michelle

In honour of the NHS turning 75, we sat down with Sheila and Michelle, a mother-daughter duo who have collectively dedicated seventy years of their lives to serving in the NHS. Their inspiring stories highlight the transformative impact of the healthcare system and their unwavering dedication to patient care.

Sheila Ramdial, a proud NHS employee for fifty years, began her journey in the NHS the day after her 18th birthday after coming over from the Caribbean. She embarked on her nursing training and found her calling in gynecology, offering support to patients who have experienced miscarriages at Whipps Cross Hospital. Sheila's personal experience as a mother fuels her empathy for those who have suffered the loss of their babies.

Michelle, Sheila's daughter, joined the NHS almost two decades ago. Initially considering midwifery, Michelle took her mother's advice and pursued adult nursing, which she hasn't looked back on since. Inspired by her mother's dedication, Michelle's passion for nursing grew stronger. She volunteered prior to her formal training, confirming her love for the profession.

Working at Whipps Cross Hospital, Sheila and Michelle have seen the NHS evolve over the years. A significant milestone was reached in 2012 when Whipps Cross and Newham Hospital became part of Barts and The London NHS Trust, now known as Barts Health NHS Trust. Sheila mentioned the significant changes she experienced include the heightened emphasis on valuing and supporting staff, as well as a renewed commitment to enhancing patient care.

The Ramdial family has collectively contributed over 120 years of service to the NHS, with Sheila's husband and another daughter also being part of this healthcare system. They often share stories at home, cherishing the bonds forged through shared experiences.

We've done over 120 years in the NHS together. If it wasn't for the NHS, we wouldn't be here today.

Celebrating the NHS's 75th anniversary holds deep personal significance for the family. They recognise the tremendous impact the NHS has had on their lives and countless others. Their collective years of service embody the dedication and passion that drive the NHS forward.
