Honorary award for heart centre Simon

Simon Woldman, the director of our Barts Heart Centre, has been named an honorary clinical professor by our academic partners Queen Mary University of London.

The title recognises Simon’s standing in the field of cardiology and his major role in the work of the university, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision of higher degrees.

Simon qualified from the University of Glasgow in 1989.

After working as a consultant cardiologist for several years at The Ayr Hospital, he moved to London in 2006 as part of the University College London Hospitals NHS Trust (Heart Hospital) cardiology team.

Simon joined St Bartholomew’s in 2015 when the merger occurred between teams from the Heart, London Chest and St Bartholomew's hospitals.

Barts Heart Centre is the largest cardiology and cardiac surgery centre on a single site in Europe.

Simon became its director in 2019.

He has a special interest in heart failure and the management of endocarditis.

Simon said: “I am very touched to have received this honour and incredibly grateful to QMUL for offering me it. Every day when I walk the wards at the heart centre, I realise how lucky I am to lead such an amazing group of professionals, who each, in their own way, deserve to be called-out and recognised."

St Bartholomew's Hospital chief executive Professor Charles Knight said: "On behalf of the whole hospital, I would like to congratulate Simon on this well-deserved achievement. It is a fitting honour that reflects his great eminence and expertise.

"Having someone of Simon's knowledge and experience is immensely important to St Bartholomew's and I am enormously grateful for his fantastic leadership of the Heart Centre."
