First female cardiac surgeon appointed at St Bartholomew’s Hospital

Congratulations to Ana Lopez-Marco who has been appointed as the first permanent female consultant cardiac surgeon at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

Ana graduated in medicine from the University of Valencia in 2005.

She completed two national training programmes: cardiovascular surgery at Hospital de Bellvitge in Barcelona, Spain, and cardiothoracic surgery in the Wales Deanery (University Hospital of Wales and Morriston Hospital).

She was awarded the SCTS Ethicon National Fellowship and invested for further training in complex aortic surgery at St Bartholomew’s  Hospital where she was appointed as locum consultant cardiac and aortic surgeon in September 2020.

Ana is also double board certified (RCS Ed and EBCTS) and holds a PhD degree from the University of Barcelona and has been recently appointed as honorary senior lecturer at the William Harvey Research Institute.

She is also active in clinical research with a special interest in improving clinical outcomes. She has authored over 30 publications and presented in multiple national and international forums.

She has recently co-led a multi-centre in the UK to evaluate the impact of the COVID pandemic on access to treatment for aortovascular conditions.

Ana is currently working as an advocate for patients in increasing awareness of aortic dissection and improving clinical pathways to guarantee better outcomes.

Ana Lopez-Marco, consultant cardiac and aortic surgeon, said: “I’m humbled and proud that I have been appointed as the first permanent female consultant cardiac surgeon at St Bartholomew’s, something which I won’t take lightly.

“I advocate for patients and families with aortovascular diseases. With our current values and working ethos, we will make St Bartholomew’s a world leading service for aortovascular diseases.”
