Leading Beyond Boundaries: Common Purpose comes to Newham Hospital
A new initiative aimed at developing leaders who can cross boundaries, break down silos and solve complex problems is coming to Newham Hospital.
Run by Common Purpose, a global charity that develops leadership capacity across different sectors, the programme comprises three workshops run over three months. In these in-person experiential workshops, staff will connect and engage with city, community and sector leaders, including a former Borough Commander of the Metropolitan Police, the Deputy Director at the Department for International Trade and many others.
In this immersive training, participants will focus on building their personal agility, on becoming more inclusive and more resilient to solve complex problems, both in the hospital and in the Borough of Newham. To further embed what they learn at these workshops, staff will also get an opportunity to participate in an international Common Purpose Leadership Programme, to build their personal agility and effectively lead.
“It’s going to be hugely beneficial for the hospital to have nearly 40 staff – from different disciplines and of different levels – take part in this programme”, says Andrew Kelso, Newham Hospital’s Medical Director.
“At the hospital, one of our aims is to break down the boundaries between us and the wider care system across Newham and beyond. We can sometimes focus solely our own work and the challenges that we face in caring for patients when we see them, forgetting that patients’ journeys don’t start or stop at the hospital. Many of them have been unwell for years before and will still need support after they’ve been discharged.
“Through this programme, I hope we can support our staff in learning how to look externally as well as internally, and in doing so, become better problem solvers and leaders, ultimately improving care and outcomes for our patients.”
Learning through experience
Known for delivering experiential leadership programmes in over 100 cities worldwide, Common Purpose have designed a bespoke programme for Newham Hospital staff. This simple, effective and empowering programme will allow them to learn through experience about cultural intelligence, crossing boundaries, leading beyond authority and the importance of engaging and working with diverse groups of people.
“Society needs leaders who can overcome problems and break down silos both inside and outside their organisation. To do this, staff need to lead peers, partners and stakeholders and take a different approach to leadership”, explains Ridhima Tomar, the Common Purpose programme lead for Newham Hospital.
“At Common Purpose, we help leaders do this by immersing them in places they wouldn’t normally go and enabling them to engage with diverse groups of leaders they wouldn’t normally meet. This programme, which is underpinned by cross-boundary leadership, is designed to help leaders to gain and build confidence, to lead beyond the scope of their formal authority and to become more agile and inclusive. The focus will be on building competencies and behaviours that will be vital to driving change, making an impact and for staff to progress their careers and overcome some of the systemic barriers they may encounter.”
